I bet you didn't know that Josh was one of Santa's reindeer. Obviously one of the lesser known but not less important. Prior to Christmas, both Emma and Josh's classes made cute little reindeer hats. For at least a two week period during the holidays, we could not have a meal without Josh first needing to put on his hat. He would look around until he spotted his reindeer and then make it known that it had to be on his head before he could proceed. Unfortunately, after much love, the hat did not survive (you may note we had already lost an eye by the time the pictures below were taken) but photos and the memories live on.

Valentine's Day Fun
Emma and Josh both had big days at school for Valentine's Day. Emma's class had a pajama party with lots of treats including cake pops courtesy of yours truly. According to Emma, the rest of her class enjoyed them as well and since I gave her a sneak preview and caught her reaction yesterday, I am not surprised if they went over big. Josh's class went a different route and had a Sock Hop. How I would have loved to see his class bopping around in their 50's wear today. To top off all the fun, you should have seen the loot they both came home with! Guess I'll have to take on the difficult task of sorting through the candy to take out anything they don't need. Josh wasn't feeling totally cooperative this morning but here are a few photos of our little 50's greaser and his pajama clad sister. I did try to roll an empty raisin box in Josh's sleeve but he wasn't too sure about that. We should have gotten a photo at the end of the day because Josh's hair was something else by that point. Happy Valentine's Day!

Bracing Ourselves!
There is another forecast of snow for this week and it may amount to 4-6 inches, which basically means that the city will be shut down for months or until this weekend when we get back into the 50's. I am hopeful that this is the last blast of winter weather because I am over using vacation days due to less than an inch of snow on the ground. Enough complaints about the weather; the real reason I gathered us here today is to recap a couple of moments from this weekend.
- Josh appears to have learned the color blue. Several times yesterday and this morning, he would pick up or point to something that was blue and say "boo". Coincidence, I think not!
- After Green Bay scored a touchdown at one point last night, I said "Josh, touchdown" and put my arms in the air. At this point, he also put his arms up and then basically flung himself to the ground. Since he was smiling, it appeared that this was on purpose so I tried it again and got the same result. He is a bruiser!
- Yesterday afternoon, Emma was demonstrating her jumping skills to me and after one jump, she must have thought she got pretty high in the air because she said "I thought I was going to jump to heaven with Jesus".
- Finally, Brad filled the bird feeder this weekend but unfortunately our number on visitor has been a squirrel. Emma loves being on squirrel patrol and when he arrives, runs over, bangs on the door and yells "No, no, no!" in a definite squirrel frightening away voice.
- Since cold and cough remedies are out for the younger set, Emma gets honey to soothe her cough and she LIKES honey. Last night, she told us she needed some honey to which I responded that she really didn't have a cough anymore. At this point, she gives a fake little cough and in the most pitiful voice says "but I'm coughing". She still didn't get the honey; guess she needs to work on the acting skills a bit!

Snow Recap
At the beginning of January, we had our first and hopefully only "major" snowstorm of the winter. The snow started falling late Sunday afternoon shortly before we were due to leave for a belated Christmas party with Brad's group at work. We forged ahead but didn't get about a mile down the road before I was questioning the decision. Unfortunately, Brad didn't have his cell phone so we couldn't reach one of his coworkers and the number his boss provided was wrong. Since we couldn't reach anybody, we kept moving forward with a Mom whose nerves were a bit frayed, a little girl who was so excited that we were driving in the snow, and a little boy who didn't know any better.
We did make it to our destination and had a good time although Brad was restricted on his wine consumption as there was no way I was driving us home. By the time we left, the snow was really coming down and the window was icy up fraying my nerves even more if that was possible. Meanwhile, Emma was in the backseat constantly chattering and asking me questions. Emma talked and talked and talked and then it was silent; she had finally fallen asleep thankfully. We made it home without incident and knowing full well that there would be no daycare the next day. Emma woke up as I was getting her dressed for bed and wanted to head out in the snow right then and there. I was able to talk her down but first thing Monday morning, she was ready and raring to go. Finally, it was time to go out so we got the kids all bundled up complete with plastic bags (one of these days we might get boots) to keep their shoes and feet dry.
Emma was thrilled to be outside in the snow while Josh wasn't so sure what to make of that cold, white stuff. We finally coaxed him into walking out into the snow and into the backyard, which was okay unless he fell down. He did not like sitting in the snow. However, a little bit of sliding and then sledding and Josh came around. By the afternoon, he had even gotten to the point that he would try to make a snow angel with sister although his consisted of sitting and moving his feet back and forth; he certainly wasn't about to lay down in the snow. We had a great day playing in the snow between sledding, snow angels, and snowball fights. Emma was definitely disappointed that the snow melted and keeps hoping that we'll get more. She did not get that from me! Here are a few photos from our snow day!

Christmas Day
Where did I leave off? Oh yes, we are up to Christmas Day! Josh and I were up first and way too early but did manage to catch a few more zzz's on the couch before big sis arrived on the scene. Emma came out to the living room and immediately checked to see if Santa had arrived. She mustered up as much excitement as she could, since it turns out she woke up feverish, to exclaim that Santa had arrived. After breakfast, it was finally time to rip into all those packages that had been tormenting Emma for weeks. Josh, on the other hand, could have cared less about the packages but saw this as a time to finally seek and destroy the ornaments on the tree that had been tormenting him for weeks; the tree was on the other side of the baby gates.
Josh got lots of cars and trucks but absolutely loved the package of 150 plastic balls!
The big thing this year was their new kitchen. Brad and I had put it together on Christmas Eve and set it up in the play room. After opening all the gifts, we took the kids downstairs Emma was a bit confused as to why the play room door was shut so we told her to open it up. When she did, the reaction went something like this "Look, we got a kitchen" without an ounce of excitement but in her defense, she was sick and while her voice lacked excitement, her actions said otherwise.
We rounded out the rest of our day with an afternoon visit with RiRi and Mr. Win and then drove around and looked at some lights in the neighborhood that night. Other than a slightly sick Emma, it was a great Christmas.
The plan was then to celebrate Christmas with Brad's family over New Year's weekend but you may be able to guess what happened there given the fact that Emma was sick on Christmas and did not get it from Josh. Therefore, it was almost inevitable that Josh would be next in line and unfortunately, he didn't disappoint. He spent the next week not feeling quite right during which time Brad had some weird allergic reaction and about the time those two were up and running, I got sick so no Missouri Christmas. Instead, Brad's parents brought down gifts a couple of weeks later so Christmas went on extra long for Emma and Josh.

17 Months
Josh, Brother Bear, Bubby, J Bubs, Joshie, Josh Bear (my favorite nickname that Emma has given him), you are 17 months old today and so full of life and personality. Over the past month, you had visits from your Papa and Mema and from Bo and Gram. You also got to experience snow for the first time. At first you were okay with it unless you fell down but you really took to sledding and eventually got brave enough to make a snow angel with your feet at least.
You are off and running, literally, especially when it means chasing after your sister! You definitely have a little temper to match that red hair and if something gets taken away or you do not get what you want, you let us know. Apparently though, you keep yourself in check at daycare as they never see that side of you. You love your cars and trucks and will move them around going "vroom, vroom". You also love balls and anything that in any way resembles a ball, which is often bad for your Mom and Dad at dinner time.
While you can make a mess like none other, you do love to help clean up and have recently started taking your plate to the sink after meals. You are so proud of yourself and stand there afterwards waiting for applause. You also love to get the broom out and "sweep" up for us, which includes a lot of watching out by anybody within reach. When we ask Emma to pick up her toys, you are usually the first on scene to try and help. You give the sweetest hugs and kisses and LOVE your bear and monster! Happy 17 months Josh!
